Some of you were lucky enough to receive maniacal emails from me yesterday with headlines like I AM AT A BOOK SIGNING WITH A HEDGEHOG and photo proof.

Yes! My friend Halle, of the Jim Henson Company, co-wrote a book, Jim Henson's Enchanted Sisters: Spring's Sparkle Sleepover, in a series of adorable books on seasons personified as diverse and adorable little girls, all of whom have cute pets including a fox, a hedgehog, an armadillo, and a Pegasus. The company decided to make their book signing truly memorable by including a Pegasus fox, hedgehog, and armadillo, courtesy of a company that provides animals and handlers for movie and TV shoots.

The handler discussed the animals' lifestyle and kept them in nice traveling cages in a quiet back room except for the brief period she showed them off. They were former pets, given up due to the owners thinking twice about having exotic pets, so were used to being handled.

The armadillo squirmed a lot, so this was the only picture I managed to get that wasn't too blurry to keep. It is Armando.

Cindi hedgehog 1

This was the part where I started emailing my friends.

Hedgehog close 1

The hedgehog was literally the cutest thing I have EVER seen. Its wee paddling legs! Its little twitching nose! Unreal. Sadly you cannot have them as pets in California without a special permit. It is Brutus. No idea why.

Hedgehog me 1

I PETTED THE HEDGEHOG. The spikes are bristly, not sharp. So cute! SO CUTE. (We also had people making flower crowns.)

Me fox 1

This is a fennec fox named Jasper. It bites, so we did not get to pet its undoubtedly soft and fluffy fur. This photo was taken thirty seconds before the handler packed up and left. You can see how done she and Jasper are with the whole thing, contrasting to my demeanor of "WHEEEE!"

Brutus is *adorable*

I did laugh at Jasper and the handler's expressions in that last photo, though. They do both look very, very done.

The hedgehog is the CUTEST HEDGEHOG I've ever seen, which is a tough bar to clear!

And the fennec is also super-cute -- bummer that he was not pettable... (they do both look incredibly done in that photo, haha)

Now I shall sink into a swamp of bitter envy.

Then again, I get to pet a Pegasus every day (and so do you at camp), so maybe it's not so awful after all.

That is great PR! I saw a hedgehog in my garden once. I kind of wanted to pet it, but I didn't know if it would hurt, so I didn't.

Hedgehogs are so great. But those pics don't show the best thing about them, which is their FLOOFY WHITE TUMMY.

Aww, hedgehog. :) He is very cute. I was in a show once with someone who brought her pet hedgehog to rehearsal a couple of times! She wore him in a sort of sling and he just went to sleep and was totally chill about everything. She let people pet him, and I was a little surprised by the texture of the bristles too.

You're so lucky! You petted a hedgehog! And that fennec looks super cute.

Awwww, so cute! :D I had a friend on college, a number of years ago, with a hedgehog (A BABY HEDGEHOG) and it was the cutest, prickliest thing.

I'm terribly jealous about the fox too (and, yes, very amused at the fox's expression, which reminds me very much of my cat about five seconds before someone is getting The Claws).

Oh the hedgehog is ADORABLE.

I find armadillos super cute, too. The first time I ever saw one in person I had no idea WTF it was -- they are not remotely native to MN and I had never seen one up close -- and needed the handler to tell me if it was a mammal or a reptile or what. They are SERIOUSLY WEIRD LITTLE CREATURES.

Hedgehog, yay! (I've had two. They are soft underneath with prickles like sharp wooden beads when the are relaxed, but they can poke when they feel threatened. Also: anting.)

They are insectivores, but anting is when they smell or taste something really, really good and then contort themselves incredibly while spreading (their own) frothy spit on their spines. It's either adorable or disgusting or some weird combination of both. :)

Oh! I see. Thank you. Currently, it sounds adorable, but I suppose that might change.

Reminds me of guinea pig owner's reaction to coprophagia. There's this certain point in guinea pig ownership where you notice you've come to think it's sort of adorable when your pig eats its own poop pellets, and then you feel weird.

From: [identity profile]

Heh. Did you know that koala bears feed their own poop to their young? (It has Special Stuff in it; I don't remember what. This was long ago, but has somehow stayed with me...)

I have a thing for hedgehogs so I am so jealous. That is the cutest hedgehog ever!

OMG HEDGIE so cute! :D

And that is the best 300% done face on the handler, lol.

From: [identity profile]

The contrast between your expression and the handler's is a crackup.

From: [identity profile]

Tots adorbs! I fell in love with hedgehogs when I saw one sleeping at the Humane Society. It had its head tucked under itself, so it looked like this tiny spiky ball breathing: huff, huff, huff! So cute!

Hedgepig! Hedgepig! Hedgepig! And fox! I am so jealous. Though yeah, the handler's and fox's expressions in that last photo are priceless.

From: [identity profile]

What's funniest about the last picture is that she was holding the fox cuddled in her arms up until the point when I rushed up and demanded a picture. I didn't realize until I looked at the photo afterward that I'd basically gotten, "Want a fox? HERE!"

From: [identity profile]

You need a special licence? Well, damn. So do we, then. And I grew up with hedgehogs appropriately snuffling under the back hedge; we had to be careful with garden bonfires in the autumn, in case a hedgie had nested down among the leaves beneath...

Those animals look so, so adorable! :) It must have been so exciting to see and pet those animals...

That hedgehog...d'awwww. :)
