rachelmanija: (Books: old)
From: [personal profile] rachelmanija
Just FYI, I really disliked The Gunslinger but I LOVED the subsequent books (with mixed feelings on the last two, but overall it was an amazing series.) The entire rest of the series has a completely different tone and style. You might try picking up book two, The Drawing of the Three, reading the summary of book one at the start of that, and see if you like the second book better. It's way more like King usually is. If you don't like book two, I'd stop there.

On Writing is great - probably one of my three or four favorite books on writing.

Carrie was one of my re-reads. It was also better-written than I expected/remembered. It's interesting how much of an odd/quirky writer King was right from the start - that one also has an unusual structure and style, though what makes it memorable is mostly the rawness of Carrie's situation and feelings. I was a bullied teenager too and spent a lot of time fantasizing about telekinetically making everyone's heads explode.
