Looks like the Nazi scum saw how many people planned to show up to stand up to them in LA, and ran like the cowards they are. Apparently the Venice Nazi rally has been cancelled (but Nazi rallies are still planned in other cities). But it looks like OUR rally is still on, whether the Nazis show up or not.

I will keep updating but if our rally is happening, I'll still be there. I think it's important to show our solidarity and fire. Hey, just talking about showing up chased the Nazis out of LA before they even came - let's give them crowd photos to haunt their dreams and keep them out.

I keep expecting, up here the frozen north, for there to be news clips of half a million people singing the Battle Hymn of the Republic. (And that I will know it's got drastic-bad when it's "Marching Through Georgia" instead.)

This is perhaps not a practical expectation on my part.

It's very explicitly Christian. It's also got this place in the (nominally secular) mythology of the United States that I don't think anything else equals.

Singing the Soviet March -- which does come close, musically -- would sent a very meta message indeed. :)

Go for the Internationale, or better still, the Red Flag, just think how far up their collective nose you could get with this:

The people's flag is deepest red,
It shrouded oft our martyred dead
And ere their limbs grew stiff and cold,
Their hearts' blood dyed its every fold.

So raise the scarlet standard high,
Beneath its shade we'll live and die,
Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer,
We'll keep the red flag flying here.

I sing that one over the Maryland State Song whenever I get a chance.

Wasn't there a parody "The people's flag is palest pink/It's not so red as people think"?

John Brown's Body is sung to the same tune but the truth that marches on in it is John Brown's, not God's. (There are some very Christian verses, but there are a LOT of verses to that song.)

..it might be a little bit too explicitly-condoning-domestic terrorism though, IDK.

Julia Ward Howe actually wrote the lyrics to the Battle Hymn after hearing "John Brown's Body" and deciding (paraphrasing) that it was too good a tune to waste on inferior lyrics.

PRECEDENCE. Someone could do the same to her. (Though her lyrics are great fun to sing.)

Hymns reuse existing hymn tunes all the time. It's a thing.

Fuck, earworm!

It does have a really great shouty-thumpy resonance, though, if I set aside my "ah shit, not Christian anymore" reservations.

.......and if I don't get waylaid by the observation that, indeed, "Have You Ever Trapped Your Nipple In The Fold-Out Bit" does indeed scan to that as well as to Turkey In The Straw.

"Fuck Nazis" is always a good premise for a rally, whether or not they're marching there as well. It should just be known that that is the general position of all people with a conscience.

Sweet Honey in the Rock - "Sojourner's Battle Hymn" is dispelling my earworm nicely.

Same thing in Boston -- I think the general consensus is 'let's all show up anyway because YEAH and also because it's possible that some assholes will show up looking for trouble even if it hasn't been officially cancelled,' so showing up anyway is what I will be doing!
