Did anyone think about Philip Pullman's daemons as examples of companion animals? In Pullman, the daemon is actually a part of your soul embodied as an animal, but you can have a conversation with it as if it were a separate being.
There's also the bit where it's taboo to touch someone else's daemon... unless you're lovers. Basically, petting the cat who is your partner's daemon is sexually caressing your partner's soul, and it's the most intimate possible kind of touch.
