Via [personal profile] boundbooks, instructions for finding unclaimed funds in America. Turns out Blue Cross owed me $75.

Indie Australian sf/fantasy/YA author Andrea Host is putting all her books on sale for 99 cents until January 1.

If you have read any books by Andrea Host, please discuss in comments. Also let me know if you find any unclaimed funds!

Ahahahaha my name, too many hits. It was fun looking, though. =)

(I doubt there's any such money, anyway.)

My name is Jennifer Smith. This was...interesting. But apparently the state of New Mexico owes me over $100.

(and I am working on your email. brain offline for sick.)

Yeah, that would do it too! Good luck getting the money. :D

(no hurry, please get better soon and take care of yourself!)

I found 65 cents! I don't think I'll bother to claim it...

Yeah, it found me "less than $1" owed to me by the Washington Post. Um, OK.

That said, I REALLY don't understand why the utility company has my CURRENT ADDRESS, and bills me there...but also said I have unclaimed money ($25). You know my address. What's unclaimed about that??

I left them a link for the NY unclaimed money list.

Sometimes it's very straightforward, sometimes not. New York State xtill says it has stock that belonged to my late grandparents, a claim that my mother and aunts gave up on years ago. Still, it's worth a look (especially if you have a not-too-common name and/or lived in a relatively small city or town).

I have a nearly unique surname. That database appears to contain everyone in the States who has it and ISN'T known to be related to me (but probably some or most of them actually are).

Thanks for the links!

Thanks for passing the word about the unclaimed property sites! Someone just left a comment saying they found $5000 being held for their mom! :)

So if one liked the Touchstone trilogy, what would be good to try next?

Seconded. Those are the nearest in similarity. Also her only SF books so far.

I just ran the California search, and GE owes me one penny! Hmm, I think I'll let them keep it. (I did run this search some years back and actually got a fair bit of $$.)

I haven't read any Andrea Host books yet, but I expect I soon will. Some of these covers are downright gorgeous! I'm really tempted by Champion of the Rose/Bones of the Fair and Stained Glass Monsters; do you have any recs?

All those covers are by Julie Dillon who won the Chesney Award recently. I bought Champion of the Rose on the strength of a Booksmugglers review and that cover ^^.

Of her Fantasy books, the first book in the Medair Duology won an Aurealis Award.

Champion of the Rose could be triggery, although the problem is very well dealt with, I thought.

Stained Glass Monsters is also supposed to get a second book eventually, but it's no cliffhanger, etc.

If you do get into the Touchstone Trilogy, that is her most unlikely book, as it was created one day at a time as a webblog. So it's in diary first-person format. It has been for the last... three years?... my most reliable comfort reread.

Not to mention that Stray, the first book in the TT is permanently set to free.

Ah, I thought I knew that art style from somewhere! It's Julie Dillon! (I'm a big fan.)

Thank you for detailed recs. I have to admit I'm almost tempted to get all of them.

At that price, I don't really think you'd rue it ^^. I've liked them all so far. Lowest grade 3 out of 5 stars. But since I am by now biased towards AKH, I can't objectively say if it would work for you.

Maybe get one, read it before the end of the year and buy on the strength of your impression ^^

Oh, sweet, found what looks like a bond there for my mother. (I'd checked that a number of years ago but I guess it hadn't been processed at that point.)

heh. very small amount from when I lived in Bellevue (moved from there in '83); also something with my parents' names and mine - my father died in 1969 and my mother in 1984, and I have no related death certificates, wills weren't probated because not enough money to require it, so ghods only know if I can actually claim anything)

TL:DR - thank you!

Under $100 for my dad but I prob cant prove heir and its not really enough for me to bug my mom about. Two 'unknown's for my sister!

Thanks for the unclaimed funds links. My friends and are finding bucks. OK, not tons of bucks, but some is better than none.
