I will give some sort of prize to anyone who can guess the canon (author, etc) from whence I just read this line of dialogue: "I don't know what else they do in that lab except fertilize other people's elephants from a deep-frozen mammoth…"

Hint: The speaker and person being addressed are hang-gliding into Russia.

I thought you were reading Hamilton bios, so obviously that's not the right track.

In mid-air, he would have attempted to light a cigar, have the wind blow out his matches, tried again with gunpowder, set his glider on fire, dropped his luggage in a lake, and then crashed into someone else's elephant.

I was introduced to the historical Aaron Burr by the incident in which he set himself on fire. The degree to which his diaries could be subtitled The Socially Awkward Adventures of an Amazing Shlimazl was definitely not something I was expecting.

Have you read more of his diaries than excerpts?

I am actually in the same situation with Aaron Burr as I was with Stephenie Meyer, in that I have a friend who is reading her way through the entire opus and regularly e-mailing me with excerpts and lots of capslocked punctuation. In both cases, this has proved an extraordinarily entertaining experience.

Are they online anywhere?

I'm afraid not! They abandoned LJ in 2011 and never transitioned anywhere else. I did not intend to tantalize you.

No idea, but if it's a shifter romance I know what I'm reading next...

BUT IT SHOULD BE.

(Just as long as there are no were-elephants or were-mammoths involved, because either a) squick or b) that's a somewhat different self-publishing niche.)

Hang-gliding into Russia sounds like Operation Screaming Fist in the backstory of Neuromancer, but I don't remember any mammoths ;)

Aaron Burr: The Winter Soldier, it's got potential.

Driven to rebuild his reputation, Aaron Burr refuses to die, preserved only by his cold fury at the injustice that was Alexander Hamilton. Yet no matter how often he takes his shot, his determination to serve his country always seems to go so wrong.

It sounds rather like Erica H. Smith's Time series in tone.

"I don't know what else they do in that lab except fertilize other people's elephants from a deep-frozen mammoth…"

Probably what everybody does: drink coffee, avoid putting a new bottle on the water dispenser, look at Buzzfeed links that get sent around, and generate elephant-mammoth slash memes.

That sounds like Charles Stross, which is no huge promise that it's actually him.

I also got a Laundry Files vibe from it, but there are several of them I haven't read yet, so I have no idea if it fits into one specific one or not.

It's one of the "Modesty Blaise" comics (which I should have remembered before Rachel posted the answer because it's one that I've read).

Laundry Files isn't that bad a guess, however, since one of the Laundry Files novels has two supporting characters that are modelled after Modesty Blaise and Willie Garvin (the main characters of the Modesty Blaise comics and novels).
