I was about to say "I grew up in a similar environment as you know Bob," but a cabin that was only accessible via landing a float plane on a creek and then walking up a 4-mile trail never fails to boggle me so not really THAT similar. It's the float plane. YOU HAVE TO LAND A FLOAT PLANE IN A CREEK.

Actually, it was a completely different environment with completely different hazards - not isolated at all, it would have been literally impossible to get lost in - but it was still kind of wild and hazardous and people did die in it. It was just that the hazards were heat stroke and drowning and falls and scorpions and cobras and three-inch thorns hard as steel and sharp as syringes. In most cases, if you didn't die in ten minutes, someone would get to you. But there was a fair amount of stuff that could kill you in ten minutes, and I personally tangled with nearly all of it.

So a part of the Barkley that hits my "Hey, I could do that" is the terrain. When you grow up in those sorts of wild places, I think you permanently have in the back of your head, "Meh, I was trekking through waist-deep snow/staring down king cobras when I was nine."
