I saw the name "Mary Stolz" and immediately recalled the one Mary Stolz book I read as a kid--it was called The Noonday Friends, and while I can't remember a whole lot about it, I do remember that the protagonist is trying to save up cereal-box toys for her little brother's birthday and that someone's apartment (either the protagonist or her noonday friend) has a sheet/curtain dividing a room to make two rooms.
