Katrina book drive

Help create shelter libraries:

Living in a shelter is the most boring thing on Earth. It's like being in an airplane for weeks. If you have books lying around that you're willing to give up, please mail them and help save the refugees' sanity. If anyone has books they could mail but can't afford the cost, be aware that a) media mail is slower but cheaper, and b) you can email me and I will write you a check for the purpose.

Rachel, love the idea!

I'm sending some stuffed animals and toys for the shelters(with someone paying postage) and our family being avid readers, I like the idea of sending books.

I'll have Larry get them together and I'll take you up on the cost of shipping because I can't afford that.

I have children's and adult books. What about magazines like Country Woman, Reminise, Discover, Disney Adventures, etc.? We have those also we could send.

I'm sure magazines would be great too. Just let me know how much the shipping runs and I'll Paypal it to you.

What a wonderful thing to offer to cover shipping. Thank you!

(I will never -- well, not for a long while -- make fun of Texas again, I've been so impressed with how welcoming everyone throughout that state has been.)

Will do! I'll get a media rate quote.

And thanks for doing this! I know they'll appreciate these things.

Just found out that their focus seems to be mostly on children's/YA books to give directly to kids, especially now that the local library system seems be setting up libraries for evacuees.

Since I'm about to get on a plane, can you do me a favor and find out if they're accepting books for adults as well?

I emailed the SCBWI Houston advisor to clarify ... I haven't heard back, but it sounds from an email earlier today like they are indeed focusing on children's/YA, so I think I'd assume that until we hear otherwise. (I've just edited my own journal entry to reflect this.)

It looks like they're actually only collecting children's and young adult books.
