It doesn’t help that there’s a scene where all the cats get possessed by the moon or something and fall down and then act post-coital, like they had a giant orgy with the cat devil on the astral plane.

As far as I can tell, Tom Hooper directed this musical knowing nothing either cats or musicals, and it shows.

(I liked exactly two numbers out of his 2012 Les Misérables and my liking was based almost entirely on script and performance decisions; he can't film choreography to save his life, which is like fifty percent of the point of movie musicals, and he didn't seem to care if his actors could sing, which is the other fifty percent. I did eventually get around to watching the rest of the film and then I went and listened to the original London cast recording to feel better about life.)
