I think my instinct is to go along with whoever it was upthread who said it's about resigning yourself to grim realities and not trying to live in a dream world because that's as bad as drugs, yo!! That's the feeling I got from those books, anyway, when I was young. That believing in fairies or magic or whatever was basically like dropping acid and was going to de-equip you for Life.
