IIRC Doughty does approvingly mention the chevra kadisha. She's more unenthused about for-profit mortuaries that don't have any connection to a specific culture or community, and are just there to upsell pricey caskets.
It's interesting because I didn't even think of the chevra kadisha as an example of "out of the family" even though they are; they're part of the larger family in the sense of the community.
