It's SO punitive. Jinny is pretty annoying and I did not enjoy being in her head, but she's basically just a moody, impatient kid who just lost her best friend and doesn't know if she'll ever see him again or even if he's still alive, does not appreciate being stuck in a mom role with no idea how to do it and everyone criticizing her, and doesn't want to leave the only home she's ever known and possibly die.

Her punishment is to get her period with no idea what it is, find out that everyone was manipulating her all along, publicly fail as a mom-figure, be personally responsible for her beautiful home being destroyed, possibly cause another kid's death, and have to leave (possibly to die!) anyway.
