It has been hit by the Racism Fairy -- the one Black character in the main cast (of Americans on the Union side in the Civil War) is a stereotyped loyal servant type, and there's also some racism against Southeast Asian pirates later. Apart from that, it holds up pretty well, if, like kid me, you enjoy the sort of book where stranded people determine their latitude and longitude with trigonometry (and a pocket watch that somehow keeps perfect time).
