Not to crib from oracene, but: it's a bit murky. I *haven't* read the prequel novella, and found myself at a loss for the first few chapters. The relationship between the MC and the tattoo-demons is really interesting, and is probably the main hook for me.

This is the first novel by Liu I've read, I think.
