This is why the "family history of alcoholism/substance abuse" is something to not just take at face value. Maybe there is a genetic predisposition to alcoholism. But maybe there is a predisposition toward something else, and a society in which the acceptable way of dealing with whatever it is (depression, PTSD, etc) is to drink.
