Farmers Market Month, Day 15-16: Bread # 3, Mandarins, Steak, Sweet Potato

Yesterday I got caught up in some neighborhood drama (spent 4 hours helping a neighbor pack up for a last-minute move, or rather a move he'd left till the last minute) and I have no idea what I ate, though I have a distinct memory of being annoyed that I had neither bread nor time to bake it. I remedied that today.

I grilled a hangar steak on a no-stick pan with just a tiny bit of butter, plus salt and pepper. I am very good at making steak if I do say so myself, and that was an extremely fine steak. I had it with mashed sweet potato and the inevitable pickled daikon.

The mandarin oranges continue to delight.

And, of course, there is bread. I need to buy more black sesame paste from the Japanese market to eat with it. I have also looked up some recipes for baking black sesame milk rolls. They sound a bit complex but I am now feeling more confident in my dough. And also, I think I need to invest in an actual rolling pin rather than the impromptu substitutes I tend to use. Why yes, I have been watching The Great British Baking Show!

What a beautiful looking loaf of bread. And that mandarin!

Getting caught in drama is no fun, but I'm thinking to myself that the good side of it is that you're a **part** of your neighborhood.

I like the thought of pickled daikon being inevitable.

But please tell me that the mashed sweet potato is actually cauliflower. I am so confused.

The bread looks just lovely. I await the results of the black sesame milk rolls. That could be amazing.

Oh, interesting. It breaks up differently from yams as well. I'll check for it at the farmer's market when we actually have one going again.

I like orange sweet potatoes and also actual yams, but I don't think I've run across white sweet potatoes. I tried to discover if they had a lower glycemic index than the orange ones, but was utterly stymied by the popularity of running down regular white potatoes in favor of orange sweet potatoes. In any case, I am intrigued and would like to subscribe to your newsletter -- I mean, I am going to try to find and cook some white sweet potatoes. I am generally down with any kind of root vegetable at all.

Potatoes are a nutritional powerhouse. You just have to be wary if you're diabetic, which I am but you are not. People who write about food just cannot resist ranking everything and trashing the so-called "losers." Potatoes have potassium, vitamin C, and a large amount of good protein for a vegetable. Eat them! Eat some for me!

Oh, that's a great idea. I love eggs, but I stopped eating them for a few years in an attempt to thwart my own awful perimenopausal symptoms, and when I tried to start again I had apparently developed a sensitivity to them. It's not an allergy, I can get a flu shot, but they don't sit well. I'll think of something, though.

I am also supposed to let you know about the apple cider bread, which I have not made yet because somebody drank the cider. The iniquity.

The GBBS is such a glorious inspiration (when taken generally -- those dishes are difficult!)

Yes, get a rolling pin. It doubles as a weapon!
