Today I'm going to drive to Alhambra to get Chinese pastries at Simply Splendid, which does outstanding dan tat, and other goodies in the restaurants and grocery nearby. Then I will return home, pack a picnic basket, and go on a hike.

On Saturday I'm hanging out with Halle. On Sunday I'm either getting my hair done (if Tea Cup has an opening - I'm thinking blue and silver for winter) or prowling around LA.

On Monday my trees get planted!

I've learned a lot in the writing spaces you've created and curated, even when they're for genres I have a limited fluency in/affinity for. I'm always excited to see what cool projects you're organizing people around. (If there's another benefit anthology on the horizon, I'll be very excited. And probably still fail to produce something by the deadline, but I'll be there in spirit.)

Query: have you read The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater, and/or are Water Horses / capaill uisce / carnivorous hell-equines included in your horse-fiction love?

I have read The Scorpio Races, but I liked the premise/setting more than the book itself. I LOVE all carnivorous hell-equines!

This sounds like an amazing birthday week plan!

So far, my own has involved taking today + Monday off from work (the gift I most wanted for myself was time); walking for >3.5 hours first thing this morning through as many local parks and nearby neighborhoods as I had stamina for; doing a big shop early to avoid the weekend crowds; visiting family; and (momentarily!) getting fancy takeout to share with my housemate for dinner.

I really like your #1-4 and will give them some thought this week - this is such a neat model (and much more concise than mine the last time I tried to articulate something similar).

I hae a present but I'll wait till I come up there!

My review of Jenny Nicholson's video A needlessly thorough roast of Dear Evan Hansen (2021) is in most respects brutal enough. I appreciate her attention to details, and she's pretty accurate in how she talks about suicide! However, as a therapist my actual reaction to the musical itself contains at least three additional levels of WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK.

Thank you so much for linking, that was hilarious. I literally cried laughing at the part where she points out that Evan appears to be in-show singing at the horrified family that does not realize it's in a musical.

I read Experimental Film because of you and enjoyed it very much! I think there's been at least one or two others, but that's the one that most recently comes to mind. I also still think fondly of your fake horror film podcast fic from last Yuletide and of your Pern fic, especially the one where there's an accidental fire dragon hatching at Menolly's home hold.

I watched The Good Place because of your first review. The first season and a half remain some of my favourite TV ever; so that is significant to me! (Perhaps I would have ended up watching The Good Place regardless, but I'm really not sure of that.)

Your posts about self-publishing were instrumental in pushing me to start self-publishing my own books, and I really appreciate all the work that you've done organizing Kalikoi, too. Enemies to Lovers would have rotted on my hard drive three-quarters finished without Kalikoi to push me to finally wrap it up.

I also really enjoy your book reviews, sometimes for warning me NOT to read a book, like Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials prequels, but also because they've led me to some great books, like Vivien Alcock's The Mysterious Mr. Ross, or Penelope Farmer's children's fantasies.
