Did you feel the earthquake?

4.7, centered near Hawthorne (south LA), no injuries or deaths reported so far.

ETA: 5.0. No wonder it felt big.

I ducked under my desk. That was a long 15 seconds. But no, I'm not traumatized; I was five when I experienced my first quake, and I've been through many since.

"Q: During an EQ should you head for the doorway?

A: Only if you live in an old, unreinforced adobe house. In modern homes doorways are no stronger than any other parts of the house and usually have doors that will swing and can injure you. YOU ARE SAFER PRACTICING THE DUCK, COVER, AND HOLD under a sturdy piece of furniture."

It felt pretty darn long here (Silver Lake) too, though I wouldn't have guessed it was a 4.7.

I saw it listed as a 5.0 on the USGS chart. Weird. I certainly felt it here. (Highland Park/LA)

Eep! Glad you're okay. That's a pretty long quake, even if it was only a 4.7.

Eek! Glad you're okay.

Felt it all the way down in downtown San Diego. That's about the fourth I've felt around here.

Felt it in Santa Monica. It really rattled things.

Good to hear that you're okay. I hope [livejournal.com profile] sartorias is, too.

Ah well, animals probably feel it earlier than humans. To be perfectly pragmatic, as long as you and she are okay, I'm relieved - whatever happens to the dogs.

glad that you survived!

Big enough to notice, for sure. I kind of love small earthquakes like that. (Small by constrast with our 6.8? Nisqually quake in 2001 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nisqually_Earthquake), when I was in a building built out on a pier into the lake.) The bookshelves rattle a bit, and I get to enjoy the greatness that is geology without being worried about health or property.
