Sirens 2011, Part I

Sirens was wonderful - just what I needed after an exceptionally miserable month. I met up with old friends and acquaintances, made new friends, dressed up, dressed down, watched snow fall, had great discussions, listened to great discussions, told stories, listened to stories, and plotted a presentation for next year!

This is still my favorite con, and next year, I was thrilled to hear, it will be held in a different and, for many including myself, more accessible location, in Washington at very low altitude. (Also, I hope to never again fly into Denver airport. It was the worst turbulence I ever experienced, and I spent the last half hour of the flight locked in the bathroom throwing up, with the stewardesses screaming at me to get out. "I'll give you a bag!" one yelled. When I emerged, she shouted, "The captain is very angry at you!" I muttered, "Sucks to be him," as I returned to my seat, stepping over some more obedient person's pool of vomit in the aisle. Yecch.)

I have to run off to grad school in a few minutes (unsurprisingly but unfortunately, what I did not do was study), so this update will contain only a few photos as a teaser.

Different angles of the view from my hotel window. This is Vail, Colorado, at 9000 feet.

From the Monster Mash ball. Shveta Thakrar as Medusa, Marie Brennan as the Snow Queen, and Cora Anderson as Crow. I am thinking of writing a set of poems about their characters.

Medusa, and myself as a cyborg. ("There was an apocalypse. Stuff happened..." indicates left side. "I did what I had to do.")

The cyborg takes a cocktail break.

I had a flight like that once, not due to turbulence but rather a bad reaction to the pain medication I was taking for my kidney stone. I cannot recommend the experience.

I'm glad you had a good time after that - God knows you deserved one! The costumes look great.

I am very tired today and at work anyway, so I have very little brain, but: yay Sirens yay! And I still love your costume. :D

I once flew from Denver in a very small plane, and we went over the Continental Divide. The plane bounced so much that even with my seatbelt on my head hit the roof. I have pity for your experience.

You look wonderful! Sirens looks like so much fun!!

Washington DC or Washington the state?

Washington state, in a very beautiful foresty setting. You should come! I think Sirens would be right up your alley.

I'll be kind of sad to lose almost-driving-distance Vail, but mostly, am happy Sirens will be continuing!

Have they announced next year's theme?

It's "tales retold," and I'm very excited. :D

Those are ah MAZE ing photos; I love the landscape ones, and I *really* love your cyborg incarnation.

And I got seasick just reading about your turbulence. Ughh. But I laughed out loud at "sucks to be him."

I've wondered for a while now: Why don't airplane bathrooms have seatbelts?

You all look fantastic!

Your outfit is totally smokin'. Also, turbulence sucks. Tell me how University is going when we get coffee...one of these days!

I LOVE it. I'm free in the day tomorrow (Wed) and Fri; also most of Saturday and Sunday.

It's wonderful that Sirens was a good time, though sorry about the month that preceeded it! Fabulous pictures.

That flight sounds *appalling*.
