Supernatural: Bedtime Stories

Evil Grandma = funniest thing since Sam losing his shoe.

Did the writers seriously think that any viewers would not know the story of Snow White? It is quite famous, and there is both a Disney movie and a Disneyland ride featuring the basics of the story: evil stepmother, pale skin and dark hair, poison apple, coma. Thanks to American cultural hegemony, at least the Disney versions should be known throughout the world, and probably on Alpha Centauri. The "As you apparently don't know Dean WTF" exposition was weird and not necessary.

That aside, the fairytales were quite charming, except when they shaded into really disturbing-- which is appropriate for fairytales.

I was super-not-thrilled with Dean's "gay" line, which a) made no sense-- who doesn't know "Snow White?" b) was homophobic, c) like the bit with the kid calling other kids bitches, was done in a "oh you're cute" way, not a "Dean can be a total dick" way, which I find pretty unpleasant.

Sam and the Crossroads Demon: Ah-ha! Will Sam harrow Hell to get Dean back? Will he take on the mantle of Prince of Hell to do it? I sure hope so!

I am sorry to see the end of the Crossroad Fangirl Demon, but intrigued to see Sam taking steps down a dark road. I think it was reasonable to kill the demon in the hope that she was lying about the contract (though because that's not the season finale, obviously she wasn't), but... he killed an innocent woman to do it, and without even trying an exorcism.

Although, sadly, I suspect that the writers understand the "killing an innocent woman" part but didn't think of the "without even trying an exorcism" one, since so far no one has tried to do an exorcism for the purpose of saving the innocents trapped inside, rather than for the purpose of punishing the demon or removing its threat. (And also, there was the whole werewolf episode where no one considered doing anything other than killing the werewolf.)

Looking forward to the zombie demon pirate episode next week.

By the way, have Ellen and Jo left the show?

Ellen is coming back later in the season, but nothing on Jo. Sadly. I loved Jo. (And Ellen, but Ellen's coming back so there's no need to be sad there.)

Was the crossroads demon potrayed by a different actress than last season?

And is travel distance sort of irrelevant now? Or (sudden thought) did he just need to find an appropriate crossroads?

I wasn't even sure the gun would work. Since blondie demon (she's REALLY hot--my soul would be SO doomed) helped with it... I mean we know it worked on the demons in that other town but...

And regarding the apparent assumption that not everyone knows about Snow White. This is American TV. There's no subtle. Writers and directors seem to assume we can't figure things out for ourselves. And to prove them right think about the general populace's opinion on foreign films...

I think the Snow White thing was bizarre regardless of opinions about American TV. It was as if they had explained that cars must be fueled with a substance known as "gasoline."

Every time the crossroads demon showed up, she was played by a different actress. All dark-haired/dark-eyed in a slinky dress, but that's the sum total of the commonalities.

Any crossroads will do if it has the yarrow, apparently.

OK. I didn't notice they were different before. Usually I'm pretty good with that sort of thing...

Oh thank you I was just ranting about this very thing. WTF, people.

Dean's "could you be more gay?" line was probably half intended as a bone thrown to the slashers. Because it's fun to have your homophobia *and* coast on a little homoerotic thrill, too.
