The fan and arrow incident is indeed famous, one that stands out in The Tale of Heike among many very memorable incidents (though not as much as Tomoe Gozen's four little paragraphs). I strongly recommend Helen McCullough's translation of same -- vigorous, entertaining, and accurate enough for any but scholarly purposes.
