I have a complicated love/hate relationship with paranormal romance (love some of it, violently hate some of it, write some of it, ALL THE FEELINGS), and I don't think deep or broad are necessarily synonyms with 'subtle' (for instance, the television show Buffy arguably resuscitated vampire romance in the last 20 years but I'd argue the execution of the 'high school as hell' metaphor was subtle).
BUT the important distinction at this stage is that paranormal romance has an exceptionally well-documented track record of selling many hundreds of thousands of books, very very recently.
If the same were true for portal fantasy, we obviously wouldn't be here.
