I read it over two decades ago, but IIRC, Gordon Dickson wrote Wolf and Iron about a man traveling through a postapocalyptic world with a wolf. All I remember about it is the introduction, in which he explains that he wrote the book, then someone who knew something about wolves read it and said "This won't do at all; your wolf here is a large dog" and so he did research and rewrote it. It may be possible that the research he did was the stuff on wolves in zoos that most people think is wild behavior.
