If you have obtained or do obtain a car, I recommend a short drive (30-45 minutes) to Flat Rock NC, where you can visit the Carl Sandburg home (his wife kept a flock of prize goats, whose descendents are available for petting) and Sky Top Orchards, to pick your own incredible apples (http://www.skytoporchard.com/). I like it there so much I seriously contemplated an 8-hour drive there for Labor Day weekend.
