I don't think that's why. It's really, really not that sort of twist: neither controversial nor traumatizing. Just cool if you haven't been spoiled for it in advance.
It's also not the only surprising thing in the book, and they didn't give away the one that could maybe be upsetting. (Though honestly anyone who would be upset by it would already be throughly upset by the entire rest of the book.) They also failed to mention that the book contains polyamory, mothers discussing birth control with their teenage daughters, Spiders of Unusual Size, some gruesome deaths, and PTSD, all of which would be way more potentially controversial or upsetting than that particular plot element.
