FWIW, I got into it from a starting point which I describe as "... is he one of those dudes with his face on a mountain or something? I DON'T KNOW, WHY DO YOU EXPECT ME TO KNOW ALL THE DETAILS OF YOUR 18TH-CENTURY POLITICIANS WE'RE NOT ALL IN THE USA YOU KNOW."
The musical is very neatly built so it feeds you all the historical info you need to follow the narrative as you go along.
Some of the fandom seems to be having fun diving into the historical background and sharing good bits on Tumblr, so there are resources and recs if you subsequently want to go deeper, but this is not something where you need to do the reading in advance; you can just jump in with the album.
