When I was eleven in India one of my best friends was from a family of Iraqi immigrants. She had reddish hair and greenish eyes and baby fat creases at her wrists and neck, and I bet she's a knock-out now.

I met a Marine at a party back when the war had just started. He was my friend's brother and he'd just gotten back from fighting in Iraq. He was the coolest, smartest, and most thoughtful man I'd met in quite some time, especially considering how ridiculously young he was.

How can I be against the war, for the Iraqis, and also for the American and other non-Iraqi soldiers fighting over there? Personally, I find it harder to understand how anyone can care about the soldiers and yet want to keep feeding more and more of them into that meatgrinder.

I'm not sure what anyone can do for the Iraqis except vote against Bush in the coming election, but I found a reputable-seeming link for sending paperbacks and other care package items to soldiers. I sent a few boxes of books to a Marine in Iraq a while back (not through a web page, she was a friend's niece) and she told me they were shared round and greatly appreciated.

I can't imagine that anyone who reads my journal doesn't have lots of spare paperbacks floating around, so unless it's completely against your principles, send them where they'll be appreciated.
