I'm up in Santa Barbara now at my parents' place. They just got back from a trip to India via Hong Kong, and bought me three Hong Kong DVDs. Unfortunately, their DVD player is not hooked up, although I am such a techno-whiz that I immediately did so and have already watched one of the movies-- Had you going, huh? Actually, I nagged my Dad to try to hook it up, but he hasn't tried yet.
Anyway, the movies are Warriors of Heaven and Earth and House of Flying Daggers, both apparently Region 3, which I'm not sure will play on my DVD player, although it might on my laptop. Also The Twins Effect, wich is all region so should be OK.
House of Flying Daggers is about to open in theatres here, so I'll be able to see it one way or another. This was directed by Zhang Yimou, who did Hero, which Ellen Kushner-- yes, that Ellen Kushner-- is currently raving about.
It stars Zhang Ziyi from Hero and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and also Takeshi Kaneshiro and Andy Lau, who you can see are the two most beautiful men on Earth. I'm really looking forward to it.
I had to look up The Twins Effect on imdb.com, which summarized the plot as "With the help of a famous high-kicking Hong Kong bus driver, two girls who just want to have fun confront the grave responsibility of safekeeping the world from vampire domination." In other words, Buffy meets Jackie Chan. Or something. Directed by Dante Lam, who co-directed Beast Cops, a terrific and eccentric Triad cop movie with Tarantino-esque dialogue starring the fab character actor Anthony Wong.
I also had to look up Warriors of Heaven and Earth: "Japanese emissary is sent to the Gobi desert to execute a renegade soldier. When a caravan transporting a Buddhist monk and a valuable treasure is threatened by thieves, however, the two warriors might unite to protect the travelers." Sounds good.
Also, I got some work done on the memoir rewrites. But if I'd remembered I was going to be working on my laptop in semi-public with a bunch of relatives around, I'd have changed my desktop image, which is the infamous "God, please violate me" picture from Saiyuki. I was going to link to it, but now I can't seem to find it.
Um... just imagine a very sexy manga drawing of a handsome young man with a monocle... which is cracked... and he's tied with thorn vines... and bleeding... and looks like he's totally consented to what's going on... and that's the caption.
Not something I really want my parents, aunts, etc to see that I have set as my desktop.
