I don't make New Year's resolutions. Don't know why; I just never have. However, I synchronicitously ran into my old dojo pal the CHP Lt. at Starbucks today, and our conversation reminded me that I have been meaning for forever to brush up on my disaster training, and look into the possibility of training in urban search and rescue, such as removing people from collapsed buildings. Not to be morbid and creepifying, but I live in LA: sooner or later, there will be a need. (I used to be a disaster relief worker, but that was years ago and all my certifications have lapsed.)

He also told me that if I'd been one of his people, I'd have gotten a medal of valor for the time I pulled someone out of a burning car, which was very gratifying to hear, especially since I had just come out of a difficult yoga class (which his wife had been in!) and had been reflecting gloomily on my current lack of physical fitness. (I may not be able to do whatever pose it was that involved leaning most of my body weight on one hand, but if it's possible without special equipment, even if I hurt afterward, I could still get someone out of a burning car.)

So, this new year I will a) lurk at the CHP office for Sekrit Writerly Reasons, b) do the CERT training, c) pursue the possibility of additional training.

Has anyone on my list done CERT or something similar?
