My second-most popular demand, here is an excerpt from my unfinished first novel. I made some minor edits to include some necessary context.
I have kind of a tortured relationship with this book, and the reason it's unfinished has to do with flaws that would require reworking the entire story from the ground up. I might do that some day, but I'm not actively doing so right now.
The novel is a fantasy alternate history set in India at the time of the War of 1857. Emphasis on alternate. Major aspects of history and culture are significantly different from our world.
The excerpt below the cut is a story within a story. An older Indian soldier who's fighting against the British is talking to some young soldiers in the rebel army. They've just been through their first battle, and he's telling them the story of his own first time.
1700 words.
( My first battle was two days' journey from the village where I was born )
