Mental illnesses are complicated. There usually isn't just one cause, and by that I mean both that for any individual, there's probably multiple factors going on, and that the same illness can have different causes for different people. Sure, dysfunctional families will screw up their kids. But not all screwed-up kids (let alone adults) come from dysfunctional families.

That's very interesting about the trans person with anorexia. Reshaping the body/feeling that something is wrong about the body does seem like a plausible explanation. I've also come across a trans man who had an ED history that was primarily about how drastic weight loss made his body appear and feel more masculine.

Anorexia may also (sometimes) be a form or manifestation of OCD.
