I wasn't actually sure whether Kane's double was another Doppelganger just like Lena's, or was another member of his original party who'd gotten refracted into looking like Kane and lost his original identity in the process. I sort of like the latter idea, but I don't know why -- maybe just the notion that something differently weird happens to everyone who goes in there.
