A Japanese movie about a low-budget zombie movie that's filming when it gets attacked by actual zombies. If you think that premise is so not your cup of tea, keep reading.

I went into this movie completely cold except for the one-sentence premise above, and it was an enormously fun experience. So I will give you the opportunity to do the same by putting most of this review behind a spoiler cut. However, it's a movie that I think would appeal to a lot of you who wouldn't normally see it, and going in cold isn't essential to your enjoyment but is more of a fun bonus. So if you don't think you'd watch a movie with this premise, click on the spoiler cut. (The spoilers are extremely mild.)

It's not a zombie movie, it's a movie about the making of a zombie movie in which a low-budget zombie movie is filming when it gets attacked by actual zombies.

The first thirty minutes of this movie are an extremely low-budget, distinctly batshit, but enthusiastic version of the one-line premise. Then the movie-within-the-movie ends, a "three months earlier" card appears, and the actual genre of the movie reveals itself: it's Noises Off as a Japanese zombie movie shot live for television, and it's hilarious. If you enjoy backstage comedy, you have GOT to watch this. It's great.

The gore level is enthusiastic but not realistic, and after the first thirty minutes, you can see crew members hurling fake blood. You do not need to like horror to find One Cut of the Dead a delight, though it's probably even funnier if you do. I've worked on TV and low-budget movies, and One Cut of the Dead is absolutely plausible, much as Noises Off is absolutely plausible if you've ever done live theatre.
