I did not know about the sequel, and I'm glad to be aware of it before I read the book -- because yeah, I've had the experience of misreading a book on account of thinking either that it was a standalone and it wasn't, or of thinking it was the start of a series and it wasn't. It definitely affects my sense of a book's pacing!
