Oh yes, I absolutely think that's what people are told. And we shouldn't be, and we shouldn't have to be, and it's impossible anyway. "But what if it was possible?" is such a powerful question to explore.
Yes, exactly! It's such an interesting question that the book asks. (And even before knowing the twist, it was really interesting to watch Hazel and Nella when I "just" thought it was a book about assimilation and succeeding in a white man's world.)
