Literally everything (well, near their hotel anyway) was fine and just out of range! Multiple people killed themselves and everyone lurked miserably being hungry and cold when all they ever had to do was get through the woods (which admittedly had a small number of desperate probably-cannibals) to the next town over.
(The woods had probably-cannibals because they were the people who'd been kicked out of town for being violent assholes.)
I am still boggled by the sheer number of really quite interesting plot threads that were introduced, brought up repeatedly, and then just dropped.
