I had requested a different minor character for Yuletide this year (Sylvia D'Agostino) so it was fun to match on a request for James Ritter. His time in the House went very badly for him and yet he clearly loves and misses it.

Wo and Shade launch their shop.

I've been wanting to fill this prompt for a while, to focus on a pair of intriguing secondary characters in Martin's SF horror classic "Sandkings." Wo and Shade are the proprietors of the shop which sells the main character a set of interesting new pets. I also love them and was delighted to get a chance to fill in a bit of their backstory.

You're so welcome! I was so pleased to finally get to write them.

You know, it never even occurred to me that they could have died at the end. I always assumed that it took longer than expected to deal with the insane white sandking, and Simon Kress went in the wrong direction.And yeah, I expect they now do a sociopath screening before handing over any sandkings.

(It's so hilarious to me how shocked Kress is when he says he was sold a tank full of infants. Simon Kress, shocked!

I was honestly so relieved when I heard that GRRM planned a whole series of stories about those two and their pet shops because I really did assume that they had died trying to fix that issue. It makes a lot of sense that they would come out alright though, Shade is a Sand King and knows how they work from the inside and Jala is Shade's partner after all!

I suppose the third option is that they sort of clocked Simon taking himself off in the wrong direction and didn't try THAT hard to steer him away again... depending on how criminal and/or ruthless we might consider those two being...
