The entire fight broke my heart. Even as Naruto's threatening to kill Gaara if Gaara hurts Naruto's friends, Naruto's still probably the first person to understand how lonely Gaara's been and to cry for him. And Gaara realizes it.
One of the major themes running through "Naruto" is how lonely all of the characters are in their individual ways, and how loneliness affects people in different ways, and how they reach out from that loneliness. One of the reasons I adore Naruto as a character so much is that he's a main character who (unlike many notable action hero main character types) will never, ever take his friends for granted.
