Oh my gosh, I'd forgotten Paul Gallico! I so loved his books -- hunted them all down in libraries and devoured them, sniffled and cried silently as I avidly read the sad endings... thank you for reminding me of them. All three of the books mentioned by your above commenters were secretly savored delights to me. ;)
