If we (as a society) decided to accept that the Rapture was in fact a possibility, it would provide an excellent reason to round up all those who expected to be assumed and put them in, well, safe places in the middle of nowhere, to protect others from them.
Since they're just waiting to be assumed, they don't really need to do much, and since society knows they are unreliable, there's no point putting them in positions of responsibility.
