My rural-WA cousins call each other "ornery" and occasionally apply it to themselves. It is apparently pronounced "AWNry" in their dialect.
Have you read Michael Marshall Smith's Only Forward? I had trouble getting into it while it didn't know whether it wanted to be Douglas Adams or Clive Barker, but the ending kicked my ass. (Not sure it would now; I later read a Diana Wynne Jones with a similar conceit.)
