I spent the day driving around, to San Diego and back, making five sales stops and spending thirteen hours at work if you count driving time. I didn't make much money, and traffic was horrible.

The nadir of the day came when I stopped at a stop sign, looked in both directions, then got rear-ended. I got out of the car, inspected it, then told the old woman who had hit me, "You lucked out. I don't see any damage."

"Sorry," she muttered. I got back in mine, but before I could start it up again, she went on the wrong side of the road to pass me and screeched off into the distance! The old hag.

But I kept thinking, "I sold my first book and there was a splashy announcement in Publishers Lunch today!" And then I was happy.

I recently learned that I'm the first of Emma Bull and Will Shetterly's writing students to sell a book. (I started in their class, then they invited me to join their Scribblies West-type writing group, the sadly short-lived (they moved to Arizona) Sacred Flying House of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or Sacred Flying House for short.) That makes me happy, too. They taught me a lot. If you ever get a chance to take a class from Will and Emma, go for it.
