Karen Joy Fowler's short story "The Pelican Bar" (in the antho Eclipse 3 and up for several genre awards/bests of this year) tackles the same phenom. And man, it's a scary fucking story. I had the honor of critiquing it at the rio hondo workshop, and had creepy creepy dreams afterward...
