I was struck by:

Kay Redfield Jamison, who has repeatedly said that she would be dead if she didn't take the damn lithium.

In retrospect, I’m glad it was never medicated away, even though my recollections of my twenties are tinged with a lot of darkness.

Oh, trust me, honey, if you can come through it so happy you weren't medicated and all tralala scatty me, I forget my coffee because I'm so crazy and creative, trust me, you don't know shit about darkness.
