Well, SPOILER: Hades wasn't the actual villain, he was framed. The actual villain was Kronos, the father of the gods, who is trying to use Luke to rise from the pit that he was thrown into. Hades also gets better in later books. I thought it was pretty clever that he made everyone think Hades was the bad guy, when he really wasn't.
