I don't recognize the book but I'd say that of the options, the people who should MOST take a sick day instead of going on the final mission are:
* The little sister * Anyone who's been described as brown-skinned * Any and all pets * Anyone who'd be looking for their love interest in the MEN FOR MEN or WOMEN FOR WOMEN sections of craigslist.
The heroine and her love interest can go in with guns blazing.
Also, if this is on a stage and being sung, any ladies who sing mezzo soprano or alto should go hide somewhere safe until the shooting dies down. The soprano's going to be fine.
I agree with your logic except then I was like, "It's probably a dystopia of the You Must Be Depressed Forever variety, in which case rocks fall and everyone dies, except the heroine, who lives with the suffering and angst forever."
While the pet will either die for no good reason or not die even though there is plenty of good reason. (You do know the trope Death by Newbery, right?)
I might or might not recognize the book, but hanging around in YA Dystopiaville for as long as I have, I'd say EVERYONE is likely to go down except the heroine and her love interest. Definitely the pets, siblings, and supporting cast.
I can't fill out the poll due to my weird browser issues, but, the possibilities include: The sister, the brown-skinned badass, the rogue's buddy, and the pet.
Yeha, see, my theory is, heroine survives (to angst), and the buddy dying means the adopted son can survive (to be Very Sad); the buddy dying means there's also the to-be-wife who can be Sad. If the adopted son died, the equation's somewhat different, since I don't know if the to-be-wife likes/loves him.
I say brown-skinned warrior woman, plans-to-be-married guy, and pet, at a minimum. Next up would be the little sister. Don't know the book, but then I avoid YA dystopias like the plague. ;)
It depends on whether it's a Defiant Last Stand book or a Life's A Bitch And Then You Suffer More book. If the former, the buddy and the brown-skinned warrior are toast, but the sister and the pet have at least a fighting chance. If it's the latter, it's the sister and the pet that are guaranteed toast, and the buddy and the brown-skinned warrior are still likely to die in that "rocks fall, everyone dies" way, but the impact will be secondary to the kid/pet thing.
E-mail me the title of the book? (Or ROT-13 it or something?) I'm curious now, and I don't mind spoilers for this kind of thing.
It's Defiant Last Stand, and you are totally right about who dies in those.
Oybbq Erq Ebnq. It's actually the best of the YA dystopias I've read this year, with a very strong voice, albeit with the usual flaws of thin characterization and worldbuilding, and giant gaping plot holes. I will review when I get a chance.

Otherwise, kill off the love interest so she can go through courtship again in ep 2.

I mean, I'd bet there's a TvTrope for how that guy always dies.
