The December theme is "YA fantasy with non-white protagonists by authors of color." We will return to "YA fantasy with LGBTQ protagonists" in February. (Yes, it would be great if there was overlap, but I only know of a few books which qualify in both categories, and I've already read them.)

I really can't fathom (ha) why Racing the Dark keeps getting placed as YA. It's a good book, and I think the trilogy is really going to be impressive as a whole, but a young protagonist does not YA make.

Half World is good and would be fun to analyze.

Of the two Okorafors I'd go for Akata Witch -- I had a harder time liking it but I think there's more to talk about.

All that said, I'm voting for Manifest, because bunch of psychic kids FTW.

It is marketed as YA, isn't it? I haven't read it yet, but IIRC, it came out a couple years ago, when the YA market seemed more open to unconventional works than it seems now.
