I decided not to count countries where I didn't get out of the airport, except for Kuwait, because I had such a memorable airport experience there and it's not a country I'd ever visit voluntarily. (The airport experience strengthened that resolution.)

So many more places to go. I'm off to Japan for a more in-depth look come September, and I won't be back till mid-May.

I think while I'm there I'll take advantage of the proximity to the rest of Asia and visit Hong Kong, at least, and maybe China and Korea. You can take a ferry to Korea, except I wouldn't because I hate boats. Has anyone reading this been to parts of Asia that are easily accessible from Japan? Where should I go? How should I get there? What local delicacies should I try?

As most of you know by now, I love huge hustling cities but also wilderness, I'm not in the least afraid of roughing it or being by myself where nobody speaks English, I will eat most things that are not slimy and I like roadside vendors, I'm not big on beaches or luxury hotels or boring little "relaxing" towns or anything that smacks of Club Med, and I'm absolutely goofy over Japanese gardens and seasonal colors.
