I finally caught up with Romance of the Red Dust. I'm sure you'll all be as sad as I was to hear that Idiot Son (currently a war slave with the mind of six-year-old and the strength of ten) was not much in evidence, though very memorable when he did appear.

Also, I missed some episodes, so [livejournal.com profile] oyceter explained to me that Hong Fu is no longer blind or in a brothel, and Li Jing has recovered from his leech-induced paralysis. Darn.

I also want to note for the record that someone said "Hong Fu is a woe," but I forget who. Other notable translations include the handy exclamation "A bunch of craps!" and a comment which we are all still trying to figure out, "Fling off with flying horse on the plains."

Du Gu Cheng, the stone-faced assassin trainer, spends most of these episodes in a wheelchair. Blue Assassin tenderly feeds him congee and frolicks in his general direction. She is clearly very happy with this state of affairs. Du Gu Cheng even cracks a smile!

Meanwhile, Idiot Son rampages through the dungeons in maniacal new makeup. Spotting a tasty tarantula (does China even have tarantulas?) he tries to eat it, then seizes a hapless guard, yanks him through the jailhouse bars, and whirls him above his head. Che Su (Yellow Assassin) subdues him by playing pan-pipes. Idiot Son drops Hapless Guard and smiles in a manner utterly devoid of human thought. Che Su sighs.

Also meanwhile, Zhange Lie (Curly Beard) machinates with Li Jing and some dude who is either a king or a usurping emperor or something. They imagine a virtual go board. Later, they send each other messages referring to the game. Someone drops a severed head that I thought belonged to a statue, but it turned out to be a really bad model head that was supposed to be a real head. Princess Ping Yang gets captured, escapes, lured back into captivity, and then exchanged for Hong Fu.

There is a big battle. I am slightly confused as to who is fighting who and why. Idiot Son rampages amusingly, controlled by Che Su's pipes. Evil Councilor Yang gets shot with a giant bow that shoots a spear. Alchemist Yin stabs Yang with an acupuncture needle, making him vomit blood. (Special healing always seems to involve vomiting blood.) Che Su tries to teach Idiot Son to dodge swinging sandbags, but he's hopeless. And also in love with her. Ew.

Li Jing proposes that they all attack in Chinese opera masks (a step up from his Black Spandex Screen plan.) A bad guy hurls a toddler through the air after using it as a human shield, but Hong Fu rescues it with her mad thread-catching skillz.

And the obnoxious comic relief dude sees a giant sparkling head of Ping Yang floating in the sky right before he gets ambushed. Please God, do not pair those two!
